Designer David Scott claims that an area rug must be the "spirit of the room," along with the "color scheme, furniture accessories and placement should all connect back to it."



Family Friendly Kids and pets will surely bring quick wear and tear to a area rug, so bear this in mind when deciding what colors and particularly what fabric to use. According to designer David Scott, "the number one principle of decorating with area rugs would be to purchase the carpet with your lifestyle in mind. If you have pets and young children, make sure you use wool rugs which may clean easily and have some pattern to hide the inevitable signs of life -- spots, shedding, clogs and hair."



Perfect Sizing Designer Celia Berliner suggests making the dimensions of this room rug slightly smaller than the area covered by the furniture. All Shapes and Sizes Stuck with a long, narrow living area? Area rugs come in all sizes and shapes, and there is one for every single room. Designer Andreea Avram Rusu claims that an area rug's contour must count on the furniture and the form and size of this room. In dining rooms she suggests using a rectangular rug with a long dining table, a hexagonal rug using a square table and a round rug with a table. She utilizes a rectangular area rug in this living room to mirror the long shape of this space.



Defining Spaces Do not restrict your space to only one rug. In this yoga studio and lounge, designer Andreas Charalambous and FORMA Design utilized two rugs to define the different areas within this ultra-large area. Make sure the 2 rugs complement and coordinate with each other. Designer Celia Berliner says multiple carpets are only OK in large rooms. "If you've got a very large area, the placement of carpets will create and specify multiple choice spaces which will punctuate the space and bring stability and unity to the general design," she says.



Color Unity Designer Celia Berliner employs a neutral rug to tone down the brilliant tables and sofa. The subtle reddish pattern of this rug increases the modernity of this space and reflects the color scheme. "The area rug can be used as an instrument by bringing unity into the color scheme or by creating the mood and adding character to a distance," she states.



Floor Border When adding an area rug into a room, don't completely cover the ground. "Be sure that you leave some of the flooring revealing -- I typically come in about nine inches in the baseboard when I'm making a custom area rug," designer Jennifer Duneier states. To expose the floor beneath the carpet and present a boundary, designer David Scott suggests subtracting around 12 inches from the baseboards.



Underneath It All For designer David Scott, the more the merrier. No place is off limits when it comes to utilizing area rugs. "The secret is to utilize a non-skid rug pad underneath to keep them in place," he states. Goodbye Cold Feet Designer Andreea Avram Rusu employs a neutral rug to tone down the vibrant bedding and window treatments within this contemporary bedroom. Andreea enjoys using area rugs in bedrooms to "accentuate a feeling of tranquility." Designer Jennifer Duneier's favorite spot to add a rug can be beneath a bed to prevent hopping on a cold floor.



Inspirational Touch This home office is exploding with imagination. Designer Celia Berliner proposes adding an enjoyable area rug into a home-office area for an excess jolt of inspiration and artistic flow. "If you need a pop of color or a hint of texture, then look at adding some under-footing to the space -- rugs can add mood, relaxation, warmth and personality to a space," she states.

"Layering could be an enjoyable way to make multiple colours and textures -- they just need to work together and join with all the furniture pieces," designer Amy Bubier says.
